Two habits carry most of the marks in this subject. Route every dataset to the institution that holds it and the code that governs it, and read every date as a status: what is live today, what is dated and coming, and what has already been switched off.

Stage 1: The institutions, identifiers and registers that key GB energy data

Six groups, three roles: the GB energy data ecosystem

Five organisations in the framework column set the rules for GB energy data, but the fifteen that operate the system, the four code bodies and the twenty-plus market participants have to carry them, putting a rule in far more hands than the number that wrote it.

Hold these distinctions

  • An MPAN identifies an electricity meter point and its 21 digits encode settlement treatment; an MPRN identifies a gas meter point; MPXN is the collective term for both
  • A GSP is a physical grid supply point, one of about 350; a GSP Group is one of the 14 settlement regions they roll up into, and settlement and regional data products use the Groups
  • The import register records energy taken from the grid and the export register records energy sent to it; they sit on separate MPANs and the import register never goes negative
  • A smart meter is a SMETS device in homes and small businesses communicating through the DCC; an advanced meter is the earlier non-domestic category read remotely at half-hourly grain, and DESNZ's 72 percent counts both together
  • SMETS1 meters were installed supplier by supplier and needed enrolment onto the DCC, with just over 11.1 million migrated by May 2026; SMETS2 meters are DCC-native from installation
  • Personal data covers anything linkable to an identifiable household, including half-hourly consumption; operational data such as SCADA telemetry raises security rather than privacy risk, and the two follow different access rules
  • The HAN is the in-home network linking meter, display and comms hub; the WAN is the national network carrying data from the comms hub to the DCC, split across three regional paths

Stage 2: Following a reading from meter to market to money

You can only name the rulebook and the owner for a missing reading once you have established where it stopped: the owner changes at almost every stage, and the rulebook pill changes five times across the seven.

Seven stages take a half-hour reading from meter to bill under MHHS Seven cards in a horizontal chain: Capture, Store, Transmit, Validate, Aggregate, Settle, Bill. Each card states the stage number, name, owner, a rulebook pill (from SEC, its sections, the BSCPs and BSC sections, or the supplier licence) and the question that stage answers. Owners carry the MHHS role names: the Smart Data Service validates and the Market-wide Data Service aggregates, fed by the DIP. Validate and Bill are emphasised as the two stages most likely to fail or surprise consumers. Hold these distinctions

  • The Smart Data Service retrieves half-hourly readings from smart meters and the Advanced Data Service does the same job for advanced meters, so the split is by meter category, not by function
  • The Metering Service Smart and Metering Service Advanced look after the meter assets; the data services retrieve the readings, so asset care and data retrieval are separate MHHS roles
  • The DTS is the legacy transfer network being wound down, the DIP is the live Azure-based message router at the centre of MHHS, and the DSI is a data sharing layer still in coordinated delivery to 2028
  • Import and export settle as separate meter points with separate registers; export is a settled position in its own right under MHHS, never a negative import number
  • TNUoS recovers transmission network costs on tariffs NESO publishes by 31 January, DUoS sits in each DNO's charging statement under the DCUSA, and BSUoS recovers the cost of balancing actions

Of DIP, MHHS, CCS, DSI, FMAR, Smart Data and CP30, one chip reads live and the rest read in build or in design, and a handful of bodies lead more than one each, so most of the 2030 picture is still a commitment with a date on it.

Hold these distinctions

  • The market facilitator is Elexon's coordination role for flexibility markets, appointed July 2024 with Ofgem's policy framework decision in June 2025; the FMAR delivery body role is Elexon delivering an Ofgem programme, appointed 7 March 2025, and the two are separate appointments with separate remits
  • Quick Reserve arrived from December 2024 and replaced Fast Reserve; Slow Reserve followed from March 2025 and is what STOR gave way to when STOR ended on 1 April 2026, so the replacement pairs run fast to Quick and slow to Slow
  • PAS 1878:2021 specifies the energy smart appliance architecture of ESAs, Customer Energy Managers and demand side response service providers; PAS 1879:2021 is the code of practice for operating demand side response, so one describes the parts and the other describes the conduct
  • UK Link is the gas retail backbone rebuilt through Project Nexus in 2017; Gemini handles National Transmission System capacity, nominations and balancing, operated by Xoserve for National Gas, so the split is retail against transmission
  • The Strategic Spatial Energy Plan is the single national answer to where infrastructure should go, due in final form autumn 2027; the Regional Energy Strategic Plans are the eleven local plans that turn it into regional decisions, with the transitional first plan published 30 January 2026
  • The Future Energy Scenarios are NESO's national pathways answering how much; the Distribution Future Energy Scenarios are each DNO's own scenarios, usually produced with Regen and published as open data, answering the same question at distribution granularity
  • A DSAP is a forward-looking strategy recording what a company intends to do; the Data Best Practice Guidance and its Supporting Information is the licence-backed minimum standard a published dataset must meet today, and an ambitious DSAP is no defence against failing the standard

Exam technique for the two papers

The Foundation paper is 40 single-answer questions in 60 minutes, closed book, and you pass on 24 of 40. That is 90 seconds a question, so answer in one pass and flag rather than stall. Revise the definitions, the current instrument versions and the dates, and in the sitting eliminate the two options that overclaim or say nothing before choosing between the rest. The precise option beats the sweeping one, and the test-wise habit of picking the longest answer is exactly what this bank is written to punish.

Dates are where this paper separates candidates. Say for anything after October 2024 and never the old system operator name. Know that the legacy reporting service was switched off on 31 May 2024 and that 's replaced it. Know that the has been the registration source of truth for both fuels since July 2022. Know that Initial Settlement runs 16 working days today and compresses to about seven at the M16 cutover in early July 2027, with final settlement at about four months. Know that there are seven lawful bases after the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025, not six. Know that STOR and Fast Reserve are retired, replaced by Slow Reserve from March 2025 and from December 2024, with Balancing Reserve from March 2024.

The Practitioner paper is 8 workplace scenarios in 90 minutes, open book, with four courses of action scored five, three, one and zero to a total of 40 points, and again you pass on 24. Rank the options rather than hunting one right answer. The strongest option names the register that holds the data, the organisation that operates it and the instrument that governs access, then acts within that instrument. The weakest invents a central hub GB does not have, treats a as a physical grid supply point, lets an export register net off an import one, or waits for certainty the situation will never give. Use the reference panel to check a date, not to read.

Nearly every Practitioner scenario walks the same route: name the dataset, name its holder, name the code or licence condition that governs it, then decide. When you are torn between two options, place each on that route; the one that reaches an accountable holder and a named instrument, rather than stopping at a good intention, is usually the five-point answer.
