Value Stream and Capability Matrix

Show which business capabilities enable each value stream stage, so stage performance problems point to the capabilities behind them.

Value stream and capability matrix: what each connection stage depends on

The six stages of the Deliver a new connection value stream run down the side and six business capabilities run across the top. Primary marks the capability each stage depends on; Supports marks capabilities that contribute to it.

Assess capacity is the busiest row, one stage drawing on four capabilities. When a value stream stage underperforms, this matrix says which capabilities to examine first, so capability investment is argued from the stages it would unblock rather than from anecdote.

In Phase B, when a value stream stage underperforms and capability investment needs to be argued from the stages it would unblock.
