ArchiMate Layered Viewpoint

Picture the business, application and technology layers of one architecture in a single diagram, with each layer realising services that serve the layer above.

ArchiMate layered viewpoint: business to technology in one view

The layered viewpoint stacks the business, application and technology layers of one architecture, with each layer realising services that serve the layer above it.

ArchiMate layered viewpoint: business to technology in one view The ArchiMate 3.2 layered viewpoint for a distribution network operator, in three stacked layers. At the top a connections customer is served by two business services, new connection and capacity information. Business processes for assessing capacity, designing the solution and publishing network data realise those services. Application services for capacity lookup and publication serve the processes, realised by the connections portal, the GIS and the LTDS publication system. Technology services for container hosting and data persistence serve the components, realised by a Kubernetes platform and a PostgreSQL cluster. Derived from the ArchiMate 3.2 Specification by The Open Group. Read any column bottom to top to trace how technology realises the services behind a business outcome. The pattern repeats at every tier: structure realises services, and services serve the next layer up.

When one view must carry the whole architecture, for impact-of-change analysis or an executive walkthrough from customer to platform.

What you need and what you get

You'll need

  • The services, processes, applications and platforms in scope
  • The realisation and serving relationships between them

You'll get

  • A three-layer diagram from business actor to technology node
  • A traceable path from any outcome to what realises it
